MESSAGE: NATIONAL DRUG AND ALCOHOL AWARDS

Kevin RuddI am delighted to support the National Drug and Alcohol Awards and to endorse the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence and Outstanding Contribution to Drug and Alcohol Endeavours.

There are many exceptional people and organisations that are dedicated to helping Australia tackle our drug and alcohol problems. These people and organisations represent education, health, families, youth and law enforcement services, and I see these Awards as a fitting way to celebrate the positive contributions they make for all of us on a daily basis.

The 2009 Award was presented by the Minster for Health and Ageing, the Hon Nicola Roxon, MP to Professor Ian Webster, AO.

Government must also play their part to assist communities and individuals in combating drug and alcohol problems. In recognition of the need to reduce alcohol misuse in this country, the Australian Government has committed $53.5 million for a national strategy to address binge drinking among young Australians. This includes investment in community initiatives, early intervention programs and a multimedia campaign.

The Australian Government will also take a strong and active role in combating the source of illicit drugs, which costs the Australian community through health expenditure, crime and lost productivity, as well as the pain and suffering inflicted on individuals and families. The Government supports the National Drug Strategy as a mechanism for coordinating government policies in this area.

The Ted Noffs Foundation, the Australian Drug Foundation, the Alcohol and Other Drug Council of Australia and the Australian National Council on Drugs are to be commended for their leadership in the sector and for organising these annual awards.
