Calling on unheralded heroes

Nominations are now open for the National Drug and Alcohol Awards 2005 which celebrate exceptional work of exceptional people in the drug and alcohol field.

The prestigious event provides the opportunity to encourage, recognise and celebrate Australian achievements to prevent and reduce alcohol and other drug use and associated harms.

Several categories for nomination are available including a Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence.

The awards are a collaborative effort of the Alcohol and Other Drugs Council of Australia, the Ted Noffs Foundation, the Australian Drug Foundation and the Australian National Council on Drugs.

Mr Daryl Smeaton, CEO of the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation and principal sponsor of the Awards, urged all workers in the field to consider nominating.

“Due to the demands on workers in this field, they don’t often get an opportunity to reflect on their achievements. These national awards allow them the opportunity to promote the work of particular programs and share the expertise and knowledge around,” Mr Smeaton said.

“We believe that they should be rewarded and not go unheralded.”

Generous prize money of $2000 will be awarded to each category winner and the winner of the Prime Minister’s Award will receive $5000.

Panels of expert judges will judge seven categories including excellence in prevention, excellence in treatment, excellence in research, excellence in services for young people, excellence in alcohol and drug media reporting and excellence in law enforcement.

All organisations, large and small, and individuals are urged to nominate.

To nominate go to www.drugawards.org.au or contact Ms Helen Thearle on 02 8383 6715.
