Queensland Police Party Safe Initiative recognised as a finalist in the National Drug And Alcohol Awards

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) Party Safe initiative has received recognition as a finalist in the 2008 National Drug and Alcohol Awards for Excellence in the Law Enforcement Category.

Party Safe provides a process for the community to register parties with their local police. This initiative includes a party registration form, and an information brochure on conducting safe parties and Party Safe posters so registered parties are easy to identify.

People are able to access relevant information and resources that encourage planning for a safe and incident-free party. Potential harms associated with parties are reduced, and police are alerted to potential problem areas.

The Party Safe information, available from all Queensland police stations, provides some ideas to assist in holding successful, enjoyable and safe parties for everyone concerned including parents, hosts and guests. The Party Safe information and registration brochure are also available online through the QPS internet site: http://www.police.qld.gov.au/party.

During 2007 there were over 30 000 Party Safe brochures and 6000 posters distributed throughout Queensland. The QPS Party Safe internet site has also been well accessed with an average of just over 300 registration forms downloaded each month during 2007. Over 6000 parties were registered with police during 2007, and initial figures for 2008 show an increase in registration of parties throughout various areas in Queensland.

Party Safe has been evaluated and examined both internally and externally through a number of Queensland Government taskforces including the recent Youth Violence Taskforce. Taskforce recommendations and the previous Safe Parties Taskforce have assisted in ensuring that Party Safe resources are relevant and useful for the whole community.

Support from QPS officers around the State, including School Based Police Officers and District Crime Prevention Coordinators, has been crucial to the success of Party Safe which has also had strong community support, particularly from the Matthew Stanley Foundation established following the death of Redlands teenager, Matthew Stanley, outside a youth party in September 2006.

The two other finalists in the Law Enforcement Category are the Groote Eylandt Alcohol Permit Committee, and the Queensland Corrective Services’ Indigenous Peer Education ProgramI – the overall winner will be announced on 27 June in Melbourne.

It is estimated around 10,000 Australians now work directly in drug and alcohol treatment across Australia with a further 8,500 in associated sectors.

Sponsors of the awards are the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (Principal sponsor), the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing (major sponsor); VIC Department of Human Services (major sponsor), The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (major sponsor), VIC Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (sponsor) and NSW Health — ActNow (supporter).
