FebFast nominated as a finalist in the 2009 National Drug and Alcohol Awards

FebFast has been recognised as a finalist in the 2009 National Drug and Alcohol Award for Excellence in Prevention and Community Education.

The other finalists in this category are TAFE NSW’s Alcohol and Drug Strategy and Family Drug Support’s Stepping Stones to Success program.

The judging panel, chaired by Dr Yvonne Bonomo, believe the field this year was the strongest ever. “The richness and diversity of the candidates was superb. They are always of a high standard but if these three finalists are anything to go by, Australia can be confident of a comprehensive approach to prevention in the future. There is some great work going on in this sector,” Dr Bonomo says.

FebFast has been recognised for its contribution in raising community awareness around alcohol and drug problems. This annual community event is dedicated to reducing alcohol and other drug impacts for Australians. By encouraging participants to give up alcohol for the month of February, FebFast provides an opportunity for individuals to reflect on their alcohol consumption and attitudes towards alcohol and other drugs.

Participants in the event reported an increased knowledge around alcohol and its effects as well as an improved understanding of personal drinking patterns and behaviours. Participants also noted a reduction in alcohol consumption as well as physical and mental health benefits.

The Australian Drug Foundation is an avid supporter of FebFast and recognises the organisation’s work in Australian communities in the reduction and prevention of alcohol and drug problems.
