The Geelong Advertiser’s ‘Just Think’ nominated as a finalist in the 2009 National Drug and Alcohol Awards

The Geelong Advertiser’s community campaign ‘Just Think’ has again been recognised as a finalist in the 2009 National Drug and Alcohol Award for Excellence in Drug and Alcohol Media Reporting.

The other finalists are Lateline’s Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder special and Four Corners’ report ‘On the Piss’, both from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

The judging panel chaired by the Chief Executive Office (CEO) of the Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia (ADCA), David Templeman, said the finalists reflected increasing levels of community concern regarding the harms arising from abuse of alcohol and other drugs, and all entrants provided consistent and accurate information to help communities understand the issues.

“This year, we are proud to have received record nominations in this category,’ Mr Templeman said. “The three finalists have demonstrated that their media pieces have informed the community, helped shape debate and provided impetus for further discussion”

The Geelong Advertiser has been recognised for its Just Think Campaign, now in its second year. This community campaign has spawned numerous partnerships between corporations, sporting clubs and both Federal and State Governments to work together and reduce alcohol-related violence within the Greater Geelong area.

This campaign has also sparked similar campaigns in Cairns and Sydney’s Cumberland region. ‘Just Think’ has lead to a 35 per cent reduction in alcohol-related assaults in Geelong between December 2006 and 2008.
