ABC’s Lateline nominated as a finalist in the 2009 National Drug and Alcohol Awards
Lateline’s special two-part feature on Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) has been recognised as a finalist in the 2009 National Drug and Alcohol Award for Excellence in Drug and Alcohol Media Reporting.
The other finalists are The Geelong Advertiser, which won the Award in 2007 and Four Corners’ report ‘On the Piss’.
The judging p0anel chaired by the Chief Executive Office (CEO) of the Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia (ADCA), David Templeman, said the finalists reflected increasing levels of community concern regarding the harms arising from abuse of alcohol and other drugs, and all entrants provided consistent and accurate information to help communities understand the issues.
“This year, we are proud to have received record nominations in this category,’ Mr Templeman said. “The three finalists have demonstrated that their media pieces have informed the community, helped shape debate and provided impetus for further discussion”
Lateline’s FASD special was the culmination of 4 months research into the disease and its lack of publicity/ knowledge in Australia. The first part focussed on the alarmingly high incidence of FASD in the Kimberley community of Halls Creek, where over 30 per cent of children are estimated to suffer from FAS due to alcohol exposure in the womb. This publicity helped the local community lobby the government to reform liquor licensing practices.
The second part of the special discussed FASD throughout the community, highlighting Australia’s lack of discussion of FASD compared to the US and Canada. This program publicised an often-neglected side of alcohol abuse and prompted wide-spread political and community debate.
