Prof Amanda Baker and the Centre for Brain & Mental Health Research nominated for prestigious Award

Professor Amanda Baker and the Centre for Brain and Mental Health Research have been nominated for the prestigious Excellence in Research National Drug and Alcohol Award. Professor Baker and her team are being nominated for their projects researching comorbid alcohol/ other drug use and mental health, a critical nexus to develop policies to effectively assist this patient group.

The two other finalists for the Excellence in Research award are; Dr Laure Vogl et al, for their work developing the ‘CLIMATE Schools: Alcohol Module’ training program for secondary schools in Australia and Prof. Sandra Jones from the University of Wollongong.

‘This year the Judging Panel was happy to receive record nominations in the Excellence in Research category,’ said Professor Fleming. ‘The exemplary quantity and calibre of the nominees made judging an incredibly difficult process, however, the three finalists have all demonstrated excellent research skill, and highlighted new areas for further policy/ program development’.

Professor Baker’s team directed clinical and research teams to investigate relationships between alcohol/ other drug use and mental health. These research efforts resulted in the development of two new tools to assist front-line service organisations better identify and treat this complex group.

The first tool, entitled SHADE (Self-Help for Alcohol/other drug use and Depression) has addressed not only the complexities of treatment for depression and AOD use comorbidity, but also the important issue of accessibility of evidence-based treatment. DAISI (Depression and Alcohol Integrated versus Single-focussed Interventions) found that integrated treatment for co-morbid alcohol use disorders and depression tends to produce superior outcomes to singular treatment methods
