Byron Bay drug and alcohol treatment facility nominated for a national award
25th June 2009: The Buttery of Byron Bay has been announced as a finalist in the “Excellence in Treatment and Support” category at this year’s National Drug and Alcohol Awards for its Mental Illness and Substance Abuse Lifestyle Support Program (MISA LSP). Last year The Drug & Alcohol Association of Alice Springs took home this prestigious award for their Indigenous Outreach Program. This year, fifteen nominations were received from around Australia.
The Buttery began as a youth refuge and drop in centre in 1973. During its third year of operation, 3728 people stayed at The Buttery for differing periods of time and 4000 visitors came to see the work that was being done. Over the years it has evolved into the largest provider of drug and alcohol and gambling services based in the Northern Rivers Region and is acknowledged by clients, stakeholders and other service providers as one of the best organisations of its kind in Australia.
The Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (AER) have been strong supporters of The Buttery. AER Chairman Scott Wilson said: “I commend and congratulate those who have made valuable contributions to treatment services and practice within the AOD Sector.”
There is growing evidence that an integrated treatment approach to mental illness and alcohol and drug comorbidity offers better outcomes for clients. The MISA LSP program embraces a holistic model in treating mental health, alcohol and drug issues, together with motivational interviewing, harm minimisation and mindfulness. This model offers a range of intervention programs, including group and individual counselling, early intervention, community education and awareness raising projects.
Other finalists for the Treatment and Support award include the Sydney Medically Supervised Injecting Centre and The Women’s Health Service of Western Australia for the Parenting and Pregnancy Substance Use Program (PEPISU).
The winners for each category will be announced at the Gala Dinner of the National Drug & Alcohol Awards on Friday 26 June 2009 in the Great Hall of Parliament House in Canberra. For more information on the National Drug & Alcohol Awards visit: www.drugawards.org.au
