Women’s Health Service of WA nominated as a finalist at the National Drug & Alcohol Awards
25th June 2009: The Women’s Health Service of WA has today been announced as a finalist in the “Excellence in Treatment and Support” category at this year’s National Drug and Alcohol Awards. Their Parenting and Pregnancy Substance Use Program (PEPISU). Last year The Drug & Alcohol Association of Alice Springs took home this prestigious award for their Indigenous Outreach Program. This year, fifteen nominations were received from around Australia.
The PEPISU program offers a range of services to women who are struggling to overcome problematic drug use, including services specifically for children. The program consists of counselling and outreach, children’s expressive therapy, social and recreational activities and welfare and advocacy support.
The Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (AER) Chairman Scott Wilson said: “I commend and congratulate those who have made valuable contributions to treatment services and practice within the Alcohol and Other Drug Sector.”
The PEPISU Women and Children’s Program has been successfully delivering services to the target group women and children for nine years. The program is identified as a leader in this type of service provision and is the preferred program of referral for women affected by substance use and their children by a range of agencies and departments.
The Women’s Health Service have also provided their clients with easy access to a number of other services including post natal depression counselling, domestic violence programs and medical services. This year, for example, in collaboration with a number of other WHS programs the PEPISU women will have the opportunity to participate in a number of job readiness courses facilitated by the local TAFE.
Other finalists for the Treatment and Support award include The Buttery of Byron Bay and The Sydney Medically Supervised Injecting Centre.
The winners for each category will be announced at the Gala Dinner of the National Drug & Alcohol Awards on Friday 26 June 2009 in the Great Hall of Parliament House in Canberra. For more information on the National Drug & Alcohol Awards visit:
