Drug Diversion and Police wins National Award
Drug Diversion and Police is a 30 minute educational film developed by NSW Police Drug and Alcohol Coordination (DAC). The film aims to raise front line police awareness of drug and alcohol diversion options and as a consequence increase the use of Cannabis Cautioning, Magistrates Early Intervention into Treatment (MERIT) and the Young Offenders ACT.
There has been overwhelming support for the DVD which is concerned with attitudinal change and is critical to the utility of the resource. Given the level of support already shown for the training resource NSWPF is confident that it will achieve its intended outcomes which are:
- To raise awareness of drug and alcohol diversion;
- To increase participation in drug and alcohol diversion;
- To promote harm minimisation to police;
- to enhance and reinforce local diversion training from a balanced realistic, relevant and unbiased perspective, and
- To ensure all police have access to standardised information. This is particularly important given the transient nature of police and limited opportunities to capture police through formal training.
This project won the Excellence in Law Enforcement award for the National Drug and Alcohol Awards for 2009 due to its intended educational value for police and the long-term benefits of such an initiative.
Executive Director of the Australian National Council on Drugs, Mr Gino Vumbaca, said on behave of the collaborating organisations that coordinate the awards (Ted Noffs Foundation, Australian Drug Foundation, Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia and the Australian National Council on Drugs) “The NSW Police Force has developed an exemplary film to increase police knowledge and highlight the importance of harm minimisation and diversion for those who experience drug and alcohol problems. It is refreshing to see such an approach taken by the law enforcement, and the AOD sector commends them highly”.
