Garth Popple wins PM’s Award for a career of contribution to the AOD sector
Garth Popple has been awarded the prestigious Prime Minister’s Award at the 2010 National Drug and Alcohol Awards. The award recognises an individual as having made a significant commitment and contribution to reducing the impact and negative effects of drug and alcohol use.
Mr Popple’s commitment to the Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) sector dates back to 1981 when he first occupied honorary committee and board positions in the non-profit sector.
Since then Mr Popple has been primarily focused on the Therapeutic Community (TC) movement which has included working with TCs throughout Asia. In 1991 he became involved in harm minimisation initiatives and he stays in touch with the needs and feedback from users past and present.
Mr Popple is currently the Executive Director of We Help Ourselves (WHOS) which operates six residential TCs within New South Wales and Queensland. He is also an Executive Member of the Australian National Council on Drugs (ANCD); Board Member & Past President of the Australasian Therapeutic Communities Association (ATCA), and President Elect of the International Federation of Non Government Organisations (IFNGO).
Mr Popple’s extensive contribution was recognised when he was appointed Honorary Fellow of the University of Western Sydney for services to the community. In 2007 he received a National Honour Roll Award for persons who have made a significant contribution, over a considerable time period, to the Drug and Alcohol field. Mr Popple continues to contribute to a number of national and international advisory committees.
