Gold Coast Drug Council at the Cutting Edge of Alcohol and other Drugs (AOD) Treatment Services
The Gold Coast Drug Council (GCDC) Inc is the winner of the Excellence in Treatment Category at the 2010 National Drug and Alcohol Awards.
The other two Finalists in this Category are UnitingCare Moreland Hall’s Bluebelly ATS Website, and the New South Wales Government’s Connections Program.
The GCDC has been established since 1971 and provides a wide range of specialist drug and alcohol rehabilitation services and programs including the Mirikai Residential Program, and a range of out-client programs.
The GCDC program is the first Australian alcohol and other drugs (AOD) agency to be certified for both AOD programs and mental health.
Over the past decade, research into drug and alcohol problems has shown that there are significant linkages between mental health issues and AOD use. Being dually accredited enables GCDC to engage clients in a holistic manner, increasing likelihood of treatment success.
The Mirikai Residential Program is based on a Therapeutic Community (TC) Model (De Leon, 2000) which aims to help clients develop the skills and attitudes to make long-term changes towards an alcohol and drug free lifestyle.
The TC model is a staged program, which utilises peers, program stages and program structure, daily regimens, privileges, and sanctions in a “community as method” approach to achieving lasting behavioural change
Results from the OASIS program, the halfway house that Mirikai graduates enter indicate that 76 per cent of clients are able to maintain or improve personal functioning skills, including the ability to manage crisis and prevent relapse, and that 65 per cent of OASIS clients were engaged in study, training or work.
The Winner was announced at the National Drug and Alcohol Awards Dinner on Friday 25 June 2010 at the Citigate King George Square Hotel in Brisbane.
