Goolarri Media Enterprises Makes Indigenous Communities More Aware of Alcohol Misuse

A set of television community service announcements (CSA)produced by Goolarri Media Enterprises in Broome in Western Australia has won the Excellence in Media Category of the 2010 National Drug and Alcohol Awards.

The other two Finalists in this Category are Ms Kirrilly Burton of Sydney for her article “The new face of Drug Addiction” published in The Medical Observer, and the Brisbane Indigenous Media Association’s Young, Strong and Proud Project.
With extensive participation by local Indigenous youth, Goolarri developed a unique media strategy with a succession of layered television commercials.

This involved local Indigenous young people in Western Australia’s Kimberley Region who directly related to the messages, and also felt ownership of the final product.

The six CSAs highlighted different aspects of harmful alcohol consumption. However, each CSA was thoroughly researched to ensure the information was up-to-date, accurate, and appropriate for the target audiences.

The overall campaign successfully addressed issues such as recognising alcohol poisoning, social and peer pressure, making healthy choices, and negative health effects of drinking.

Participants in the workshop planning stages of the project reported significant social and behavioural changes. Feedback included comments like: “I was amazed at all the different effects alcohol has on your body, especially a body that is still growing. Some of the stories I heard made me understand how grog can lead you down a bad path.”

The Winner was announced at the National Drug and Alcohol Awards Dinner on Friday 25 June 2010 at the Citigate King George Square Hotel in Brisbane.
