Why Some Nations Have Opted to Legalize Certain Drugs

More and more nations are opting to legalize certain drugs. One drug that is increasingly being legalized is Marijuana. The debate on whether or not to legalize such drugs is always an emotive one. But when all is said and done, the people who argue in favor of legalization tend to end up winning the debate. Much of what is happening currently (in terms of legalization of drugs) was unthinkable just a few years ago. But now it is happening. A question comes up, as to why nations have opted to legalize those drugs.

To my mind, there is one key reason as to why nations have opted to legalize certain drugs – namely to eliminate the black market that exists in places where the drugs are illegal. It has already been established that whenever something is declared to be illegal, it tends to go underground. And this leads to the springing up of underworld characters. Ultimately, more harm than good is done. When the drugs are legalized, the need to have a black market for them is done away with (or at least reduced). The underworld characters who were previously running the trade in the back alleys have to find something else to do. This is actually how you end up with a fellow who used to be a small-time drug dealer having to take up a regular job: you know, the sort of a job where he can get a paycheck through the Securitasepaytalx paperless pay system. It is a win-win situation, really: the society is protected from the negative influences associated with underworld characters, and the (previous) underworld characters get a chance to become mainstream members of the society.

There are other minor reasons as to why nations have opted to legalize certain drugs. One of those is the fact that the people who run the governments have come to realize that certain drugs (for instance marijuana) aren’t as dangerous or as harmful as was initially thought. There are better things to be done with the available resources, if the fight against drugs is to be won.  Then there is the fact that many nations want to decongest their prisons. And what better way to do so, than by legalizing certain drugs – especially keeping in mind the fact that a good number of the people who are in prison are there due to drug-related cases.
